Baseball gloves can be expensive. And I think we can blame it on the year of 1999.
It was that year that the glove of Lou Gehrig, the Iron Horse, earned the distinction of being the baseball glove sold at the highest all-time price. It was sold at an auction hosted by Sotheby’s for the hammer price of $389,500. In September of the same year, another glove of a Yankee legend, Mickey Mantle, went for $239,000 in another Sotheby’s auction. Interestingly, the Mantle glove went to comedian, actor and Yankees fan: Billy Crystal.
Honestly, the sales of game-used gloves by late Yankees legends in 1999 probably have little-to-no impact on the price of new gloves being sold in 2025. But it’s still fun to see just how much a piece of sporting goods equipment can sell for.
It can be interesting to look at baseball gloves with high prices and marvel at why someone might pay the price for that item. It’s even more interesting when you look at the innovations that glove manufacturers are putting into their design that drive up the price! Keep reading below to see the top 5 most expensive gloves that JustGloves is carrying in 2025!
The Edge X Series has wowed the baseball glove scene for the past few years as it introduces a completely new style of build not seen on baseball gloves before now. The best way to understand them is that Edge X gloves are built outside-out while most other gloves are built inside-out and then inverted to their outside-out orientation. Nokona includes 45 digitally engineered components to a single Edge X glove. But from there, 1476 cross-stitches are completed by hand to give the gloves their durability and unique look! Due to that painstaking process, you can understand why the price soars above $650.
The Hunting Season gloves borrow some of the cutting edge looks from their brother series, the Edge X gloves. The Edge Precision Construction on the Hunting Season allows for the same outside-out build as the Edge X gloves. There won’t be quite as many cross-stitches on the Hunting Season gloves as seen on the Edge X models. But you’ll still see pops of that unique hand-made touch. When you combine the pioneering design, Nokona’s classic Steerhide on the back and the American KIP leather on the palm (in an orange "safety" color) you arrive at a price of $500.
The X2 Series from Nokona is a pretty legendary line of gloves. Before the Edge X and Hunting Series gloves arrived, this model was constantly at the top of Nokona’s offerings when it came to pricing. The reason for the top-level pricing was due to the glove using multiple high-quality leathers on the glove. Both steerhide and kangaroo were used and when both of those leathers were combined together, Nokona would say (and still today says) that the glove was made from “Buckaroo” leather (with “buck” being a nod to steerhide and “-aroo” being a nod to kangaroo). As you can imagine, kangaroo leather is not super common here in the USA and leads to a price above $450 bucks.
The All-Star Pro Elite feels like a brick when it arrives in the mail for a new catcher. But stiffer leather most often means higher quality leather. AND…when you have high quality leather, you’re going to be paying a little more. That’s why this series of catcher’s mitt sells for $450. But trust us, the money invested and time involved for the break-in will be worth it. Check the video above and take the advice of the pros that routinely say to just use the mitt as much as possible to get it game-ready.
What are you going to get for the $400 you invest for a Rawlings REV1X glove? Some of it’s going to be for the 3D-printed inserts for your thumb and pinky that are lightweight and allow the glove to maintain its shape. Most notably though, it’ll get you a durable backing with eye-popping designs that could never be achieved on gloves till recently. In total, your $400 gets you maneuverability, shape and looks that’ll make teammates, opponents and even fans do double-takes when they see your glove. Watch the video above and take Francisco Lindor and Ozzie Smith’s word for it.
