Wilson Glove Day…it is one of the most incredible days of the year for the glove enthusiast. But why is it so great? After all, we're just watching grown men receive their high-quality Wilson gloves that they’ll be using for the season.
The reason the day is fantastic is because it allows baseball fans to get a glimpse of the joy that can be seen on a professional athlete’s face when they receive a special item made just for them.
On the surface, a baseball glove is a tool. Its job is to grasp and hold onto balls that are hit in its direction. But as a glove gets used more frequently, it becomes much more than an instrument for grasping baseballs.
If Gold Glove winner (and Wilson glove man) Ke'Bryan Hayes were to play every defensive inning this season, he would be toting his A2000 out to third base at least 1,458 times. That's going to add up to a lot of minutes, hours and probably even days that he spends with his glove on his hand each season. That glove needs to be so perfect in how it fits and functions that he prefers not to take it off. The common adage is that a glove needs to be an "extension of a player's arm", but more frequently, a well-cared-for glove becomes an "extension of the entire player".
On Wilson Glove Day, it is apparent that these players understand just how special it is to play baseball for a living. They understand the relationship they're about to embark upon with these gloves. And best of all, they seem grateful...
This spring, the Wilson glove team led by their Glove Guru, Aso, visited five different spring camps in Arizona with their video crew to capture those inspiring moments when big leaguers are presented with their new gloves for the 2025 season.
Kansas City
The term "fanboy" might come to mind when watching the Kansas City ball club at Wilson Glove Day 2025. Bobby Witt Jr. performed at an MVP level all of last season. However, upon seeing Wilson's Shigeaki Aso, Witt used words like "Legend" and "Glove Wizard" when referring to their Glove Guru.
Further, when his flower and space themed Wilson outfield gloves were delivered, MJ Melendez admitted to watching Aso glove videos since middle school and mentioned always trying to haul in the latest Glove of the Month from Wilson during his youth.
Standing in a bit of contrast to Witt and Melendez, was KC's ace, Seth Lugo. Lugo finished 2nd in American League Cy Young voting last year and when he takes the mound in 2025, he'll do it with a black A2K. He admittedly doesn't desire to be flashy and just wants his pitching to do the talking.
Los Angeles
What does Wilson Glove Day feel like? Well, if you ask Mookie Betts, you'll hear "Christmas Day".
As mentioned earlier, Glove Day makes the joy experienced by professional players visually apparent when they receive their new leather. Moiokie was no exception at Los Angeles' spring site in Glendale, AZ. Mookie's infield (1786 pattern) and outfield (MB50 pattern) almost look like little brother and big brother next to eachother as their colors match identically, but there sizes are quite differerent.
Teoscar Hernandez's glove pattern for 2025 seemed like an ode to a Dodger's legend. He goes with the YP66 pattern which was originally made to the specifications of outfielders Yasiel Puig who took baseball by storm in 2013 as a member of the Dodgers. Teoscar's glove is outfitted with teal color, his kids names and his personal nickname: Mr. Seeds.
Chicago North
It's fair to say that there won't be any mix-ups with outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong's glove this season. When it came to having Wilson embroider the thumb of his new leather, PCA simply told them to put "Pete's Glove" on it.
Pete wasn't the only Northsider shaking things up. New hurler, Matthew Boyd decided to go with a new look that Wilson is offering on some gloves in 2025: Suede! Wilson now buffs the Pro Stock leather on some select gloves and it allows those models to give off a distinct "suedey" look.
And finally, we have to mention that shortstop, Dansby Swanson is keeping things traditional by using Wilson's Walnut colored leather. However, that brown base look helps his glove's blue welting and lacing pop just a tad more!
Cincinnati
Shortstop Elly De La Cruz has shaken up the landscape of baseball with his play and also with his gear. Electric colors like pink aren't uncommon to see from Elly, but don't let him fool you, he's new to the vibrant color space. Cincinnati legend Barry Larkin commented "First time that Elly came to AAA, [he] didn't wear pink. First day he went to Cincinnati, he put on all this pink". All Elly could fire back with was "I'm in the big leagues [now]...I'm gonna wear my pink".
In contrast, Matt McLain, his partner-in-crime at 2B keeps things pretty simple as he rocks an A2000 that's black with a gradient Wilson logo on it.
Tyler Stephenson, their catcher, leaned more towards De La Cruz's example and shook up his glove game for 2025. He decided to run out a 35" mitt for the first time in his career. In order to keep it from being too heavy, he added the SuperSkin backing to it. SuperSkin benefits a mitt by being (1) lightweight (2) stronger than regular leather (3) water repellant and (4) easier to break in.
Cleveland
Similar to his countryman, Elly De La Cruz, Cleveland 3B Jose Ramirez loves his pinks. Both gentlemen hail from the Dominican Republic and both expressed their love of having the color pink on their gloves during 2025 Spring Training. But despite being smitten by the pink model of A2000 delivered to him on Glove Day, he ultimately asked Aso to tell him which model he should use in the upcoming season.
Steven Kwan spends the baseball season in leftn field backing up Ramirez at third base. And Kwan is approaching his glove game a little differently than Jose. He used a beautiful, but plain-looking blonde A2000 that served him well last season. It's hard to argue against anything that Kwan is doing with his defensive game as he's won three Gold Gloves in three seasons playing at baseball's highest level.
